Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees covers more than 43,000 acres of northeast Oklahoma, and Grove sits at its north end. The town has about 7,000 residents and a lake that does most of the talking. If you’re hunting for things to do in Grove Oklahoma, start with the water, then work outward to a pioneer village, a botanical garden, a hydroelectric dam, and a pelican festival that happens to be underway this week.

This guide comes from the team at Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees RV Resort, a 37-acre lakefront park in Grove. It covers what’s worth your time, what changes by season, and how to stack it into a weekend. Last verified October 1, 2026.

Pelican Festival and the Fall Migration

Every fall, thousands of American white pelicans stop at Grand Lake on their way to the Gulf of Mexico. Grove built a festival around it. The Pelican Festival runs October 1 to 4 in 2026 at Wolf Creek Park (963 N 16th St), with a carnival, arts and crafts vendors, food trucks, a downtown parade, a car, truck and bike show on Saturday, and pelican boat tours on Friday and Saturday.

Even without the festival, October and November are prime pelican-watching months. Scan the coves and shoreline early in the morning, when the birds are feeding in groups. Check the festival’s own site for schedule changes before you drive over.

Fish Grand Lake in the Fall

Grand Lake has a reputation among Oklahoma anglers, and fall is when cooler water gets fish moving and the summer boat traffic thins out. Crappie, white bass, and catfish are the usual targets, and local guide services work out of Grove if you’d like someone else to find the fish. You’ll need an Oklahoma fishing license, and the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation posts current rules and limits.

Boaters can keep a rig at the lake. The resort rents boat slips and offers boat storage, which lets you launch, fish, and be back at your site without trailering anything home. Boat slips are the feature that sets this park apart from state-park alternatives around the lake, so call ahead to ask about availability.

Har-Ber Village Museum

Har-Ber Village is a recreated pioneer town on the shore of Grand Lake, about 7 miles from the resort. Period buildings and artifacts fill the grounds, and you can walk a nature trail along the water when you’ve had enough history. Plan on 2 to 3 hours.

The museum is seasonal. It generally opens in March and closes in early November, with Thursday through Monday hours that wrap up in mid-afternoon (the last guest is admitted around 3:30 p.m.). Check the museum’s site or call before building a day around it, especially in late fall.

Lendonwood Gardens

Lendonwood Gardens covers 8 acres at 1308 Har-Ber Rd in Grove, and fall is one of its best moments. More than 75 cultivars of Japanese maple turn color along shady paths that wind past an English terrace, a Monarch Waystation, and a koi pond (bring quarters for the fish food dispenser).

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students, and kids under 12 get in free. The grounds stay open during daylight year-round. The welcome center is staffed Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closes from December 13 through March 15. Paths are wheelchair accessible.

Get Out on the Water

Grand Lake Cruises runs private tritoon trips out of Grove on a 24-foot boat, in 2-, 4-, and 8-hour blocks for up to 8 guests. It’s by appointment only, so book ahead. Swimming stops, a cooler with ice, and a hands-off captain are part of the deal, which is a good fit if you’d rather skip the boat ramp entirely.

Kayaking, swimming, and fishing from the waterfront are all on the resort’s activity list, and the park rents golf carts for getting around its 37 acres.

Pensacola Dam

Pensacola Dam is the reason the lake exists. The Grand River Dam Authority (GRDA) built it between 1938 and 1940 as Oklahoma’s first hydroelectric facility. It stretches about a mile across the Grand River Valley, has 21 floodgates on the main spillway, and holds back the roughly 43,500 acres of water that make up Grand Lake.

The dam sits near Langley at the south end of the lake, so treat it as a half-day trip. Off-season tours require a group of at least 10 and depend on guide availability. Every visitor 18 and older needs a valid government-issued photo ID. Call the tour desk at 918-782-4726 before you go. The Cherokee Area of Grand Lake State Park is in the same part of the lake if you want to pair the two.

Casinos and a Night Out

Grove has 2 casinos. Cherokee Casino Grove is on US-59 and Grand Lake Casino is on S 655 Road. Both give you an evening option when the lake goes dark, and Cherokee Casino is about 10 minutes from the resort.

A 3-Day Grand Lake Plan

Day 1: Check in, walk the waterfront, and fish or paddle until sunset. Day 2: Spend the morning at Har-Ber Village, have lunch in town, then wander Lendonwood Gardens in the afternoon. Day 3: Drive south to Pensacola Dam, then book a late cruise or catch pelicans along the shore on the way back. Swap in the Pelican Festival on a Friday or Saturday evening in early October.
