Things to Do from a Dolores Base Near Durango
The Dolores River runs right past the resort, good for fishing and cooling off without leaving the campground. Twenty minutes north, McPhee Reservoir is one of the largest lakes in Colorado, with boating, fishing for trout and bass, and boat ramps. The Animas River through Durango, about an hour east, is the region’s whitewater draw, with rafting outfitters running trips through town all summer.
Mesa Verde National Park is about 30 minutes south, where you can tour ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings like Cliff Palace and Balcony House. The San Juan Skyway loops out of Durango through Silverton, Ouray, and Telluride, one of the best mountain drives in Colorado, and the Dolores base puts you on the Telluride end of it.
