The best camping in Texas depends on which Texas you mean. The Gulf Coast gives you birds, saltwater fishing, and mild winters. The Hill Country gives you granite domes and spring-fed rivers. The Piney Woods and the big lakes give you shade and water in a state that runs hot. The Panhandle gives you a canyon that surprises people who expected flat.

This guide splits Texas into 4 regions, says when each one works, and points to the places we run ourselves so you can check availability before you commit. Last verified: October 9, 2026.

Gulf Coast: Birds, Bays, and Mild Winters

Coastal Texas is where camping in Texas runs year-round. Winter highs stay mild, summers run humid, and hurricane season (June 1 through November 30) is the one calendar item to plan around. Book flexible rates in late summer and early fall.

Rockport and the Coastal Bend

Rockport sits on Aransas Bay, roughly 35 miles northeast of Corpus Christi. The draw is birds. The Aransas National Wildlife Refuge hosts the wintering whooping crane flock, typically from November through March, and the bays around town are good fishing water.

Rockport RV Resort (1401 Smokehouse Rd., Rockport, TX 78382) has 100+ full hookup sites, with pull-throughs, concrete pads, a pool, hot tubs, a dog park, and golf cart rentals. It works for a weekend and for a winter. For the longer version, see our guide to choosing an RV park in Rockport.

Padre Island and Mustang Island

Padre Island National Seashore protects roughly 70 miles of undeveloped Gulf shoreline, which makes it the place to go when you want sand without condos. Mustang Island and Port Aransas sit closer to town amenities. From Rockport, either is a day trip.

Van Vleck and the Upper Coast

Sugar Valley RV Resort (10833 TX-35 N, Van Vleck, TX 77482) runs 130+ full hookup sites on Highway 35 and sits near the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge. It has cabins, a splash pad, an on-site convenience store, propane sales, and free WiFi. It also makes a clean overnight stop between Houston and the Rockport area.

Hill Country: Rivers, Granite, and Wildflowers

The Hill Country rewards spring and fall. Bluebonnets and other wildflowers peak from late March into April, and Lost Maples State Natural Area turns color from late October through November. Summers run hot, so plan river time (the Guadalupe and the Frio) for the warm months.

Enchanted Rock, the pink granite dome north of Fredericksburg, limits day-use entry and fills early on weekends. Reserve through Texas Parks and Wildlife before you drive. State park campsites across the region book weeks ahead for spring weekends, so lock dates early.

We do not run a Hill Country property today. If you are crossing Texas on the way to it, the Gulf Coast parks above and the Lake Conroe stop below make workable anchors on either side.

Piney Woods and Lakes: Shade and Water

East Texas has trees, which matters in July. Big Thicket National Preserve covers several distinct ecosystems in Southeast Texas, and Caddo Lake on the Louisiana border is cypress-and-moss water best explored by paddle.

Lake Conroe

Lake Conroe is a reservoir of about 21,000 acres north of Houston. Lake Conroe RV Campground (12351 FM 830 Rd, Willis, TX 77318) offers 30-amp and 50-amp sites, lake access for boating, canoeing, kayaking and fishing, a hot tub, boat storage, RV storage, a dump station, and a laundromat. Pets are welcome.

Panhandle: Palo Duro Canyon and Big Sky

Palo Duro Canyon, near Canyon, Texas, runs about 120 miles long and gets overlooked by people who think the Panhandle is flat. Spring and fall give the best hiking temperatures. Summer afternoons run hot and storms build fast, so start trails early.

Winter Camping in Texas

Texas draws snowbirds because the coast stays mild. Rockport and the Coastal Bend fill with winter visitors, and monthly rates can make a long stay practical. Our winter RV parks in Texas page and the Snowbird RV Guide cover what to expect, and Winter RV Living covers monthly park life.

Inland, a hard freeze can still arrive. Carry a heated hose or plan to drain lines overnight when the forecast dips near 32 degrees.

Planning Notes Before You Book

Reserve state park sites as early as the booking window allows; popular weekends sell out. Check burn bans and fire rules before you plan a campfire, since Texas counties issue them often in dry months. Wildlife is part of the deal here: alligators live along the coast and in lakes, so read our alligator safety guide before you let a dog near the water.
