The best time to see manatees in Crystal River is mid-December through February, on the first cold morning after a front pushes through. That’s when hundreds of them crowd into the springs of Kings Bay and Three Sisters Springs to wait out Gulf water that has dropped below 68°F. Manatee season officially runs Nov. 15 through Mar. 31.
This guide breaks the season down month by month, covers what Three Sisters Springs costs this winter, and shows how to base your RV 25 minutes inland at Preservation Point RV Resort in Inverness. Last verified Oct. 27, 2026. Prices and hours change, so check the linked pages before you drive.

Best Time to See Manatees in Crystal River, Month by Month
| When | What’s happening | Manatee odds |
|---|---|---|
| October | First cool fronts. A few manatees start drifting in, but Kings Bay water is still warm and most stay out on the Gulf. | Low |
| Nov. 1 to 14 | Early arrivals on cold snaps. Sanctuaries are not in effect yet, and paddlecraft can still enter Three Sisters Springs until Nov. 14. | Low to moderate |
| Nov. 15 to 30 | Manatee season opens, the 7 warm-water sanctuaries take effect, and Three Sisters switches to winter admission. Numbers depend on the weather. | Moderate |
| December | Counts climb with each cold front. Weekday mornings keep the boardwalk quieter. | Good |
| January | Coldest water of the year and the biggest gatherings. | Best |
| February | Cold snaps keep herds in the springs. Still one of the strongest months. | Best to good |
| March | The Gulf warms, herds thin out, and sanctuaries end Mar. 31. | Moderate, falling |
| April to September | Manatees spread along the coast and rivers. Some stay in the springs, which hold roughly 72°F all year. | Low |
The pattern follows water temperature. Manatees can’t hold their body heat once the Gulf drops below 68°F, so they move up the rivers to springs that stay near 72°F. A warm December can look like October. A hard freeze in late February can look like January.
What Time of Day and Weather Work Best
Go after a cold night. The first morning following a front is the best single bet, because manatees pack into the springs overnight and tend to stay put until the water warms. On mild afternoons they drift out into the bay to feed on seagrass, so the boardwalk thins out too.
Weekdays beat weekends. Arrive when the gates open at 8:30 a.m. and you’ll get a railing spot before the shuttle loads fill up.
Three Sisters Springs: Tickets, Shuttle and Hours
Three Sisters Springs is the easiest place to watch manatees from dry land. Winter admission runs Nov. 15 through Mar. 31:
- Adult: $20
- Senior (55+): $17.50
- Military (service member, with ID): $15
- Child (6 to 15): $7.50
- Child (5 and under): free
Summer admission (Apr. 1 through Nov. 14) drops the adult price to $12.50. Prices can change, so confirm on the city’s ticket page before you go.
Land visitors reach the springs by shuttle from the Three Sisters Springs Center at 917 Three Sisters Springs Trail. Ticket and annual pass sales stop at 3:30 p.m., and the trails run 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. most days (the Fish and Wildlife Service closes them on a short list of holidays that includes Thanksgiving, so plan Thanksgiving guests for the day before or after). The front gate at 601 Three Sisters Springs Trail has no public parking. Service animals are welcome; pets are not.
The boardwalk is being rebuilt in sections, and reports say work pauses for manatee season. A closed stretch can change where the viewing platforms are, so check the city’s Three Sisters page for current closures before you buy tickets.
Seeing Manatees From the Water in Kings Bay
Once the sanctuaries take effect Nov. 15, Three Sisters is a watch-from-the-boardwalk experience. Paddlecraft are allowed inside the springs only from Apr. 1 through Nov. 14. To get in the water with manatees in winter, book a guided trip with one of the operators holding a refuge permit. The refuge doesn’t run tours itself, but it publishes the current permit holder list.
The Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge visitor center at 1502 SE Kings Bay Drive is free and open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily during manatee season. It’s a good first stop for current sightings and rules.
Manatee Viewing Rules
- Keep your hands off. Touching, chasing, feeding or separating manatees is harassment, and harassing a manatee is a federal offense.
- Leave the drone at camp. Drones are prohibited on national wildlife refuge land.
- Give them room to leave. Sanctuaries exist so manatees can rest without swimmers, divers or boats.
- Report an injured or distressed manatee to the FWC Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922.

Where to Park the RV: Preservation Point in Inverness
Leave the rig at camp. Three Sisters Springs runs on a shuttle and walk-in system, and I couldn’t confirm oversize parking at its lots, so plan on driving your tow vehicle or car unhitched.
Preservation Point RV Resort sits at 8588 E. Gulf to Lake Hwy., Inverness, FL 34450, 12 miles west of I-75 (exit 329) on State Road 44. Three Sisters Springs is about 25 minutes away. The park covers 230 acres with 221 concrete pads, all full hookup with 50/30/20-amp power. Pull-throughs fit rigs up to 60 feet and back-ins fit up to 45. Sandhill cranes walk through camp most mornings, and there’s a catch-and-release pond and Lake Tsala Apopka frontage for kayaks.
The resort is still being built. A pool, bathhouse and laundry are on the way, so bring a self-contained rig (a laundromat sits 7 minutes up the road). Downtown Inverness and the Withlacoochee State Trail are both 6 minutes out, and Homosassa’s underwater boardwalk is roughly 30.
Manatee season doubles as snowbird season. Preservation Point is one of our snowbird RV parks and long-term RV parks, and the snowbird RV guide for the Gulf Coast covers wintering in the area. More Florida options are on our Florida parks page.
